What Victorian Picnics Taught Me About Eating Outside with Kids
Share
I pack placemats for picnics now. I did not always do this. A few years ago, a picnic meant a blanket, a bag of crackers, and a roll of paper towels. Then my two daughters started eating outside. My four-year-old holds watermelon in both hands. My one-year-old tests gravity with a cup of milk. A wipe-clean placemat under each plate does not erase the mess. It contains the mess before it spreads across the blanket. It also turns a park table into a place where we eat together, and I spend less time wiping down the whole bench.
The Victorian Picnic Took the Dining Room Outside
The word picnic entered English from the French pique-nique in the mid-18th century. It described a meal to which each guest brought a share, often served on tables carried outside. The blanket version came later. Isabella Beeton's Book of Household Management, published in 1861, includes a bill of fare for a picnic for forty people, with cold meats, pies, fruit, cakes, and a staff to set everything out. Illustrations from that period show folding tables covered with cloth, real plates, and glasses. The tablecloth and mats were not decoration. They protected the table, gave each guest a defined spot, and kept the meal from turning into a scramble.
Oilcloth Was the First Wipe-Clean Picnic Surface
Manufacturers coated canvas with linseed oil and pigment to make oilcloth in the 18th and 19th centuries. The result was a flexible surface that wiped clean and resisted moisture. Families used it on kitchen tables, pantry shelves, and outdoor picnic tables. When I wipe strawberry juice off a Poppy Mat with a damp cloth, I am using a newer version of that old idea. The material changed. The job did not.
Four Jobs a Placemat Does at a Park Table
At a park picnic table, a placemat does four jobs for a family with young children.
- It marks a boundary. A child who will not stay on a bench often stays within the edges of the mat in front of her.
- It catches overflow. A tipped cup, a dropped berry, a smear of cream cheese all land on a surface that wipes clean in seconds.
- It protects the food from the table. Park tables carry splinters, old gum, and bird droppings.
- It signals that this is a meal. We are not grabbing a bar in the car. We are sitting down to eat, even if the roof is a tree.
The reason I pack Poppy Mats outside is the same reason I use them inside. The top is smooth and coated, so a damp cloth takes care of most spills. The cork backing keeps the mat from sliding around on a wooden picnic table. On a breezy afternoon, that grip matters. I have watched paper plates blow into the grass more times than I want to count. The mats stay put. They measure roughly 16 by 12 inches, so they fit a park table without crowding a lap. The materials are non-toxic, BPA-free, and PVC-free, which matters to me when a two-year-old touches the mat and then everything else.
The Car Changed the Picnic. The Need for a Defined Spot Stayed.
American families changed how they picnicked in the 20th century. Cars made it easy to drive to a public park or a scenic overlook. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps built picnic grounds in national and state parks across the United States, often with wooden tables and benches. Families packed sandwiches, fried chicken, and a blanket. They traded the formal folding table for the ground, and individual placemats mostly disappeared from the picnic kit. But the need for a clean, defined surface stayed. My children still need that. They still need a clear signal that a plate belongs somewhere. The Victorians understood that a meal needs a table, even when the table is a folding board on the lawn.
How I Pack Placemats for a Picnic
If you pack placemats for a picnic, choose ones you can wipe clean and carry home without laundering. Cloth mats work on a dining table, but on grass or a park bench they collect juice, dirt, and crushed leaves.
The packing order
- Wipe down the park table with a damp paper towel before setting anything down.
- Set one placemat per child, plus one for each adult, before you open the food bag.
- Keep a small wet bag for used napkins and food containers.
- Wipe each mat at the table with a damp cloth, then do a second wipe at home.
I never soak the mats, and I never put them in the dishwasher. A damp cloth is enough for the kinds of messes a picnic produces.
A Picnic Table Is the Dining Room with Different Weather
When I set out a mat for each member of the family, I am doing the same thing Beeton's staff did in 1861. I am making a small, clean, defined place to eat. The roasted fowl is now a sleeve of crackers. The staff is now me, a pack of wipes, and two little girls who think a placemat is a landing pad. That need has not changed.
If you want to try this on your next picnic, the mats I use are Poppy Mats. Poppy Mats sell out fast. Join the email list to be first to know when they are back.
