How to Keep Placemats from Warping After Washing

There’s nothing more frustrating than pulling your freshly washed placemats from the dryer only to find them curled, puckered, or misshapen. I’ve been there—standing in my laundry room with a set of beautiful mats that now look like potato chips, wondering where I went wrong. As a mom who wants a table that’s both kid-ready and chic, I feel your pain. The good news? With a few simple tweaks to your care routine, you can keep your placemats flat, functional, and beautiful for years.

The Secret to Flat Placemats: It’s All About the Material

The secret to preventing warping lies in understanding what your placemats are made of. Just like you wouldn’t wash a silk blouse with your toddler’s play clothes, different placemats need different care. Treating them all the same is a fast track to warp city.

  • Fabric Placemats (Cotton, Linen, Polyester Blends): These are often machine-washable, but they are the most susceptible to warping if dried with high heat. The fibers can shrink unevenly.
  • Silicone or PVC Placemats: The superheroes for messy eaters! They’re usually dishwasher-safe, but warping is typically caused by extreme heat, like being on the bottom rack of the dishwasher.
  • Cork or Paper-Based Placemats: These are often spot-clean only. Submerging them in water is a guaranteed way to distort their shape.
  • Woven or Natural Fiber (Rush, Seagrass): These rarely go in the wash. Warping happens from prolonged moisture. A quick wipe is all they need.

Your Step-by-Step Guide to Washing & Drying

Once you know your material, follow these steps to keep them flat. This routine has saved so many of my favorite sets from an early retirement.

For Machine-Washable Fabric Placemats:

  1. Gentle Cycle & Cool Water: Use a gentle or delicate cycle with cold or lukewarm water. Aggressive cycles can twist and strain the fibers.
  2. Mild Detergent: Skip the heavy-duty cleaners and opt for something mild.
  3. The Game-Changer—Air Dry Flat: This is the most important step. Do not put fabric placemats in the dryer. The tumbling and high heat cause uneven shrinkage. Instead, lay them flat on a clean, dry towel or a drying rack. Gently reshape them with your hands. If you must use the dryer, use the absolute lowest heat setting or an air-only cycle, and remove them immediately while still slightly damp to finish air-drying flat.

For Silicone, PVC, or Plastic Placemats:

  • Top-Rack Dishwasher Safe: Always place them on the top rack of the dishwasher, away from the heating element. Using a cooler dry setting or turning off the heated dry cycle is even better.
  • Hand-Wash for Longevity: For my favorite sets, I often just give them a quick scrub in the sink with warm, soapy water. It takes 60 seconds and guarantees no heat exposure.

For Cork, Woven, or Natural Materials:

Wipe, don’t wash. Simply wipe spills immediately with a damp cloth. For deeper cleans, use a cloth with a mild soap solution, then wipe with a cloth dampened with plain water. Never soak them.

The "Rescue Mission" for Already-Warped Placemats

All is not lost if you have a few warped soldiers in your drawer! You can often rehabilitate them. I’ve saved many a mat this way.

  • Fabric Mats: Dampen the warped mat evenly with a spray bottle. Lay it flat on an ironing board, place a thin, damp pressing cloth (like a tea towel) over it, and press with a medium-hot iron. Don’t glide; press and lift. Flip and repeat. Then, let it air-dry flat under a heavy book or a few cookbooks.
  • Silicone/PVC Mats: Submerge the warped mat in a sink of warm (not hot) water to make it pliable. Lay it perfectly flat on your countertop and place a baking sheet or large, flat cutting board on top. Weigh it down with heavy cans or books and leave it for 24 hours.

My Real-Life Hack: Invest in Mats Designed for Chaos

As a mom, my ultimate strategy has been choosing placemats designed to withstand our beautiful, messy life. I lean heavily into a few trusted solutions:

  • Machine-Washable & Lay-Flat-Dry Brands: Many modern brands now specify “lay flat to dry” and use stable, pre-shrunk fabrics. This is a feature I actively look for now.
  • Silicone Backing: Some beautiful fabric placemats have a thin, flexible silicone backing. This helps them grip the table and can add stability to resist warping.
  • The Practical Beauty Mindset: I’ve made peace with the fact that my everyday mats need to be as practical as they are pretty. A neutral, textured silicone mat or a durable fabric set in a timeless color saves me stress and keeps our table looking pulled-together—even after a dinner involving yogurt and blueberries.

Remember, the goal isn’t a perfect, museum-like table. It’s a gathered, connected space where messes happen. By giving your placemats just a little thoughtful care, you protect your investment and spend less time fussing and more time enjoying those noisy, wonderful family meals.

I started this brand because mealtime in my home looked a lot like yours — full of love, laughter, and messes. We wanted something that could keep up with real life but still make the table feel beautiful. So we designed placemats that do both.
